Chapter 21 – Mountain Bandits Subjugation / Young Noblewoman’s Agony

In the next morning, I’m heading to the location suspected as the bandit hideout that Sherry-san told me. The hideout located in a mountainous area in the middle of public road connected Mizell and the capital (in katakana: Jyunu-fu, I assume it) Genev.
I give everyone the potion that have prepared beforehand. I asked Neris-san to make these potions that have the effect of the thief skill [Sneaking]. I don’t intend on taking all hundreds of bandits head on from the start. My plan is to aim for the boss first instead.
The bandits use an old fortress that was built in the middle of the mountain as their base. Was there war happened around here in the past? ...... When I am thinking about that, I recall my memory about Junegan kingdom’s history from when I am still playing the game.
Junegan Kingdom was a kingdom founded by four brothers. After the kingdom founded, they divide the land and govern their own area individually but then greed spur on the brothers to steal the other territory by the means of war. All the four brothers get involved with the war but while the other 3 older brothers are locked in a fight, the youngest’s kingdom, that is looked down upon as the weakest and don’t get attacked by the other older brothers because they don’t see the need to managed to counter invade the older brothers kingdom that are weakened because of war and conquer them. The youngest actually always act weak and shows how small his kingdom power is to his older brothers. Even if he doesn’t act weak to deceive his brothers from the beginning, it was said that he could still win the conflict but he purposely done that in order to lessen the blood flowing from his subject.
The current royal family started from that youngest brother and the bloodline still continues on until now. So from that history ---- I am thinking that, won’t this old fortress a relic left from the age of the four brothers war? Probably the guild only know that place as a bandit’s hideout while they don’t have the information about the fortress history. Sherry-san didn’t tell me anything else beforehand after all.
“Well now...... From here on, there’s a high possibility that the bandits would have some scout lurking around hiding their presence. Let us start hiding our presence now”

The three girls nod at the same time and quickly drink their [Sneaking] potion.

With this, the enemy cannot detect us easily. To see through sneaking with 100% certainty, the active skill [Detect] is needed but there are hardly any people that could learns it. I can only get that active skill after reaching level 110 in Negotiation after all so it definitely is an over-powered active skill.
“Well then, I will sneak into the fortress and look for the boss. I want Monica-san and the rest to make some smoke in the forest. Make sure that the fire won’t spread too much. And then when the attention of the bandits inside the fortress are directed to the smoke, I want everyone to lay down in an area where you can have a clear look on the fortress”
“Hiroto...... are you alright going in alone? We can’t guarantee that the bandits won’t put traps inside their base”

When facing another human in battle, the only one that could battle them in full power while not killing them is me. Because the only one that have the skill [Mercy] in my party is me. I got it from leveling up my [Sacred] Sword Art skill and it helps me a lot in many situations.
In the game, when a player commits a sin, their karma points would increase and they will receive harsh penalty like being barred from entering town and even becoming a fugitive hunted by the bailiff. In this world, rather than the karma system, any crime will be judged by the law so if anyone found to commit crime like murder or theft, they will become a criminal.
If the enemies come at us with the intent to kill, it will be difficult for us to strike back while being careful of our opponent lifes. Because of that, I intend to make everyone else to only do the supporting role. Even if killing a criminal doesn’t count as a sin according to the law, the murder counter could affects negatively when trying to reach higher grade Job.
“Monica-neechan, please use either paralyzing arrow or tranquilizer arrow. I think Wendy won’t have problem but if you need to engage the enemy then you should use weapon destroying skill. Nameless-san should either use support magic or hinder the enemy movement”
“So in short defeat every bandit without killing them right? ...... I get it. We will capture every defeated enemy and tie them all”
“Weapon destroying skill...... I understand. To increase the skill’s success rate, I will equip Sword Breaker instead de arimasu”
“This one shall goes as usual right? This one might use offensive magic to keep the enemy in check but this one will try to keep the fire power down”
Magician can control how much mana they want to use for a spell. Even when they use the same magic, the damage could vary depending on the amount of mana used. The maximum amount of mana a Magician can use for a single magic can be calculated from their Magician skill level multiplied by ten.
“Everyone, I repeat it again but please don’t do the impossible. Well then, let’s start the mission”
After I confirm everyone response, I go around to reach the fortress rear area. While confirming the position of the bandit’s look out, I am also searching for a place where I could infiltrate ---- I find a spot in the outer wall that is overgrown with creeping ivy plant that could help me climb.
(Infiltration mission eh...... There were also similar kind of quests back in game. If you fail back in the game, you will be sent back to the start. Thinking about that, I can’t help feeling at ease)
Because in real life, even if I got exposed, I can still try to knock everyone that find me out and everything would still be alright. We actually borrow Yuishia’s power to hitch a ride here and I made her standing by in the forest close by so in terms of fire power, my team actually have a surplus. It just that Yuishia can’t hold her power back when fighting so the only thing I can do is to tell her to use her dragon magic to petrify the enemy. Even if the enemy isn’t killed that way, the only person I know who can heal petrify status is only Riona with her grade 7 healing magic [Healing Rain]. And the other way that I know on how to cure petrify is by using elixir which I want to save up as much as possible so I don’t wish to use it to cure petrify if I can.
While sidetracking in my mind, I use the gap in the look out’s attention when they changing shift to start infiltrating. I use the ivy plant to help me climb and with the effects of sneaking which covers the sound I make, I managed to sneak inner wall successfully. I lurk around in hidden spot trying to grasp the situation around ---- When I suddenly overhear someone talking.
“Hey, did ya know whether the head really going out with one of us?”
“The hell are ya sayin’? The head said that I am a good lad and invite me to the gang”
“Ee? I also got told the same when invited but as we are now mountain bandits, the head can’t treat me differently until I gain merits and get promoted......”
“Dumbass, it means that you are not even worthy”
“Yo-you never know right!? Just wait! I will soon steal some amazing treasure and get promotion!”
Is this what you call a honey trap? Or rather a catch sales? It seems that the bandit’s head is a woman and she used her weapon as a female to gather males to become her subordinate. But seeing this condition, I feel that the bandit might soon be collapsed from the inside.

“You guys, stop gossiping and do your look out properly!”

Black short haired women with eyepatch is scolding the men. Is that the head...... No it seems to be the wrong person.

The mountain bandits also have it hard eh...... After all, they have given me a lot of information that made me start to think whether it is okay to empathize with them. The thing that a good look out man should have is the ability to keep yourself from gossiping. A mental persistence to endure boredom. And these guys don't have any sign of that.

I strike with the blunt side of the axe. This move is called blunt strike. This active skill could be learned when one reaches level 30 in Knighthood skill but there is also mercy passive skill that they could learn when reaching level 50 in the same Knighthood skill. The Knighthood skill have many active and passive skills that add discretion toward the enemy. But at the present time, I only managed to reach level 30 in the said skill.
Anyway I have knocked out two bandits now so after checking that the closest room to my position is empty, I throw the two unconscious bandits into the room after tying their limbs. I leave the knife that one of the bandits had in a place that the two bandits could reach if they try hard enough just in case no one finds them. They would be able to cut the rope on their own when they wake up ---- but at that time the mountain bandit troupe might have been annihilated.

I know that the head is somewhere ‘in the deepest part’ of the fortress but I don’t know her exact position but all the bandit on look out are gossiping nonchalantly so I just eavesdrop them, beat them, tie them up, move along, and repeat. I finally find what I’m looking for.
It seems that there was a big party the night before. The bandits today aren’t going out to plunder with more than half of them still sleeping inside the fortress. The one awaken and doing look out are the better ones of the bandits but they also still couldn’t get off from yesterday exhilaration and keep gossiping with each other about their internal condition. I learned from them that besides the head, Poison Rose gank higher ups are all women. It appears that even if the head scout out males underling using her allure, she is actually hates men. But I don’t know whether I need this information or not.
(This is one in a monsoon chance. Logically speaking, I can’t just let this chance go)
After defeating about another 10 bandits on the lookout, I finally arrived in front of the room that is said to be where the head is having her bath. Someone acknowledged by many as the head would definitely not be someone simple. She might bring her weapon inside the bathing place. While keeping my guard up in order to respond quickly if I got attacked, I carefully open the door. I know that this place is old and making a new bathing room here is not weird but hurting your own pocket from chasing such luxury and end up doing business in slavery to make up is...... So while having some displeasure against the bandits, I boldly opens the door while still holding my one-handed axe.

“Che...... To let this kind of kid infiltrate here, those look outs really are useless. But if you think that I would surrender because you ambush me inside the bathing room then you are in for a beating!”
The head who is a woman that is naked as she is currently taking a bath doesn’t seem to mind her attire at all as she quickly reach out for her dagger that is placed just in hands reach from her and fluidly throw it at my direction.
(That is quite fast...... But not enough......!)

I swing my axe to parry the flying dagger. The dagger knocked off from its course and stabbed the ceiling. The head instantly loses her weapon.
“Ho-how can you parry my dagger with that axe? ...... Th-this brat is strong......!”

Why do she looks familiar? ...... That curly hair with a tinge of blue, eyes that look a bit sharp...... but overall still quite a beauty.
(...... Rather, how can I forget her? The [Thief] skill that I ‘received’ from her is still useful until now after all)

The head that still standing naked in front of me started to cover her sensitive places as she starts to mind my gaze. Her eyes opened wide as she stares at me...... and then.
“You brat...... Do I met you somewhere...... No, it can’t be! There’s no way that devil comes all the way here......”
